COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM

MVP Basketball Camp was incorporated in 1994 as a non-profit organization serving the children of Westchester County. Throughout the history of the camp, MVP has given over 2600 children the opportunity to attend camp on scholarship awards extended through our Community Outreach Program. We are extremely proud that no deserving child has ever been turned away from MVP due to an inability to pay the camp tuition. We believe that paid campers benefit also from the opportunity to play basketball and make friends with children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Community Outreach Program has grown every year and is truly the cornerstone of the camp. Thanks in part to the generosity of our donors, 2007 was a record year, with 317 children attending camp under the umbrella of the Community Outreach Program. The testimonials we receive from campers and their families make it clear that for many of these kids, the benefits from the time they’ve spent at MVP extend far beyond their one week camp experience.

We also believe that the economically disadvantaged are not the only ones who should benefit from our Community Outreach Program and we have been proactive in responding to needs in the community. In the wake of the World Trade Center tragedy, we launched, in conjunction with the New York City Fire Commissioner, The MVP Firefighters Fund, an ongoing program that allows children with relatives who were firefighters lost on 9/11 to attend camp on a full scholarship. Then in 2005 we initiated Hoops for Troops, which provides children of soldiers deployed in the military the opportunity to attend MVP Basketball Camp free of charge. As we look towards the future, MVP is launching an annual fund-raising event in the form of a 3-on-3 tournament so we can continue to expand the Community Outreach Program in the face of rising costs without having to raise tuitions for paying campers.

MVP 2010 VISION

While we are very pleased with what the MVP Community Outreach Program has accomplished, we are resolved to do even more. As a result, we have launched MVP 2010 Vision.

The objective of 2010 Vision is simply to increase to 400 per summer the number of boys and girls attending MVP on scholarships by the year 2010. Having seen the tremendous benefits that camp imparts on these youngsters, we are determined to extend its positive influence to more children in the Westchester area.

400 full scholarships have a value of $140,000. While we are currently funding a good portion of our Community Outreach Program through internally generated revenues, we are also determined to keep tuition low for paid campers, even in the face of rising costs. Therefore, the only way we can achieve the ambitious goal of the 2010 Vision is through donations. If you wish to make a tax deductible contribution or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Andy Greene, our Director of Development at agreene@mvpbasketballcamp.org

STAN GREENE COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD

The vision of Stan Greene, the founder of MVP Basketball Camp, was honored again this year with the presentation of a Stan Greene Community Spirit Award to Lynn Samaha of Alps Management, a company that operates McDonald's franchises in White Plains, NY. Lynn and her brother Peter have been instrumental in helping MVP receive grants from Ronald McDonald House Charities that pay for numerous scholarship awards. Alps Management also helps MVP provide food to all of the Campers. Due to the generous support of several area restaraunts, MVP does not have to charge any additional fee to offer lunch daily in the school's cafeteria.

On the plaque reads one of Stan Greene’s favorite sayings: “The world may be different because you were important in the life of a child.” At MVP, we believe in the importance of friendships between children of diverse backgrounds, we believe in the importance of learning about teamwork and fair play from caring coaches, and we believe our kids grow as a result of their MVP experience. That is what our Community Outreach Program is all about. We thank Lynn and Peter Samaha for exemplifying the values of our founder.
